INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: HEY CAREERS HUB TEAMS WITH WIME TO PROMOTE STEM APPRENTICESHIPS

The Student Voice Celebration Event

The Student Voice celebration event took place on Tuesday, 12th March 2024, at the iconic Guildhall, Hull. Student Voice was commissioned in the 2022/23 academic year by the Hull & East Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (HEY LEP) in partnership with The Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) and Hull and East Yorkshire Careers Hub and was delivered by Different Resonance. The event started with a brief overview by Matt Johnson, Director at Different Resonance on what Student Voice represents. He said, “Student Voice is a first-of-its kind programme for the region, focused on capturing students’ views about careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) within schools”.

Afterwards, students from participating schools took turns to make presentations and share their thoughts on how they would like to see careers knowledge shaped and delivered for them. It was delightful to see the youngsters, bold and self-assured, speaking in front of a keenly interested audience and sharing their opinions articulately across four topics: current provision by schools, accessing careers information and guidance, the world of work and hopes for the future. “It is exciting to see young people having a say about careers and for them to be able to speak so confidently, asking pertinent questions, just tells how successful the project has been” says Pauline Vipond, the Area Manager, Careers and Enterprise Company (CEC) at the event.

Alex Codd, Hull City Council’s Assistant Director of Economic Development and Regeneration concluded the event with an insightful talk on the role of Careers in the Economic Regeneration of Hull and East Yorkshire. Alex to the students: “without people like you Hull & the East Riding has no future. My role is to ensure you have the opportunity to gain the skills and qualifications our Employers need”.

NET ZERO WORK EXPERIENCE

An exciting new project has launched across three schools in Hull & East Yorkshire. In this pilot project the traditional work experience model has been reimagined with a focus on Net Zero industries and careers. The launch events have seen over 500 students from year 9 deepen their understanding of Net Zero and what current and emerging careers are available across a large range of industries. The topic was brought to life by employers from BAE Systems, Meld Energy, Orsted, Swift Group, Keepmoat, RWE and the Aura Innovation Centre.
