HEY LEP governance structure – an opportunity to be involved in driving the economy of the region

Following the successful recruitment of our new HEY LEP Board we are now in the process of recruiting members for three of our HEY LEP sub-boards:

  • Employment and Skills Board
  • Business Support Board
  • Investment Board

The Employment and Skills Board will focus on reducing the skills gaps in the region, delivering the recommendations of the Local Skills Report by creating the foundations for the growth of new jobs in the region, in addition to ensuring that young people receive high quality careers advice.

The Business Support Board’s role is to ensure that businesses can receive and access advice, finance and other support to sustain and develop their organisations to flourish, whatever their size and sector.

The Infrastructure Board will look at future investment opportunities for the region as well as have a focus on transport and placed-based property developments and bring together government agencies, where required, to expedite these developments.

Applying for a place on one of our sub-boards is an opportunity for you to bring your valuable lived experience within the region’s business community to help us shape the economic direction of Hull and East Yorkshire.

This is an open opportunity and we encourage applications from all kinds of diverse backgrounds and sectors including enterprise, education, not for profit, health or digital.

If you would like to apply for a role as member of any of our sub-boards, please complete an expression of interest statement referencing your knowledge, skills and experience relevant to the this role as well as your reasons for wishing to participate on our sub-boards. We may also be interested in your skills in other LEP related activities such as working groups or in an advisory capacity.

Membership will be approved by a Nominations Panel, consisting of Chair James Newman, Deputy Chair Stephen Parnaby and the Chair of the sub-Board itself, (who is a LEP Board member), supported by the COO of the LEP. All decisions will be made by 30th June 2021.

The deadline to submit an application is midnight on Sunday 20th June 2021.

Please read this letter from our Chair James Newman for more details:

Dear Colleague,

2 June 2021

As you are aware, the Humber LEP ceased operations on the 31 March 2021. It was replaced the following day by the Hull and East Yorkshire LEP, known as the HEY LEP for all activities north of the Estuary. Following an open recruitment process, a new HEY LEP Board has been appointed and the Board has now met twice to discuss the way forward.

It has been agreed that a number of sub-Boards will initially be instituted so that the Humber LEP activity can be continued in the HEY LEP geography and that new activities can be planned and supported. These sub-Boards will be smaller that some of the previous Humber LEP sub-Boards to enable a quicker  responsiveness to the opportunities, which the new geography provides.

Recruitment to these new boards, under LEP governance national guidelines, need to be open to all interested parties, who have completed an Expression of Interest form (EOI). The decisions as to who is chosen to sit on these sub-Boards will be made of a Nominations Panel, consisting of myself as Chair of the HEY LEP, the Deputy Chair, the Chair of the sub-Board itself, who is a LEP Board member, supported by the Chief Operating Officer of the LEP. All decisions will be made by 30 June 2021.

The three initial sub-Boards we are creating are Business Support, Employment and Skills and Infrastructure, which includes transport, property, flooding and housing activities.

We would be interested in hearing from anyone, who is interested in serving on one of the LEP sub-Boards. You will need to complete the attached Expression of Interest form to allow us to put your name forward to the Nominations Panel. It is not a complicated form and can be completed and returned online or forwarded by post, whichever is more convenient.

We sincerely hope that you will want to support the new HEY LEP and look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
James Newman, Chair
