The LEP’s first Growth Deal was announced in July 2014, totalling £103.7m of investment from the Government’s Local Growth Fund (LGF) and £263.3m from other public and private sector sources. This was extended in January 2015 with a further £9.9m LGF investment, taking in additional projects.
The investment is used to support a range of projects led by our partners, including local authorities and education/training providers. The funding of all projects is subject to approval of their business cases, following independent scrutiny.
Completed projects
New flood defences at Albert Dock, Hull
The first project to complete (in July 2015) was flood alleviation works at Albert Dock, Hull. Responding to the tidal surge in December 2013, this project involved the construction of a 1,600m concrete wall. It is now providing increased protection to homes, businesses and critical infrastructure in a large part of Hull city centre.
In Goole, a new cycle scheme along the A161 Bridge Street was completed in July 2016, improving access to key employment sites including the Enterprise Zone sites.
The £4m extension to the Growing the Humber grant programme was fully committed in August. This will support more than £21m of business investment and is set to exceed the target of creating 275 jobs.
The new roundabout at Humberside Airport
Work is also complete on the Humberside Airport Surface Access Scheme, which has seen new roundabouts constructed at the Humberside Airport main access and the Barnetby Top junction to open up development opportunities, along with widening of Caistor Road to improve access.
The new glass wall flood defence at Paull
An innovative glass wall is now in place in Paull to provide improved flood defences, with a further phase of work to follow on the Hull & Holderness scheme.
Earlier this month, Goole College launched its completed Carpentry and Joinery Workshop. Work was completed in September, ready for the new academic year.
Projects under construction
Construction is under way on most of the remaining Growth Deal projects. This includes:
- Work in Grimsby town centre to deliver improved public spaces and a new office block on Cartergate, which is almost complete.
- Phase 2 of the Bridlington Integrated Transport Plan, which will deliver improved transport routes in the town and open up new opportunities for development.
- Hull’s housing renewal programme, which has already seen 301 homes started with support from the Local Growth Fund.
- Work around Holy Trinity Church and improvements to the Indoor Market in Hull, as part of the wider investment in the city centre ahead of Hull: UK City of Culture 2017.
- Demolition work is progressing well ready for the construction of the new Hull Venue, a 3,500 capacity performance space.
- Demolition work has also taken place to prepare for the construction of a lagoon for the Anlaby and East Ella Flood Alleviation Scheme.
- Maintenance work on Grovehill Bridge in Beverley is almost complete.
- Fit-out is under way on Grimsby Institute’s Environmental Logistics Learning Hub (now known as MODAL), which will provide a centre of excellence for logistics training.
- The delivery of improvements to the A1105 Anlaby Road, Hull, is also progressing well.
More to come
The next projects to see construction on site will include the ERGO centre at the Humber Bridgehead business park, the Westcliff Regeneration Enterprise Hub, new offshore wind facilities at the Port of Grimsby, and infrastructure work at Normanby Hall Country Park in North Lincolnshire.
Pre-construction development work is also progressing on many schemes, including the Lincolnshire Lakes Flood Risk Strategy, the gauge enhancements to the South Humber rail line and the Cottingham and Orchard Park Flood Alleviation Scheme.
The current Growth Deal programme is on course to end in 2020/21. However, earlier this year the LEP put forward a proposal for a further Growth Deal which would see more projects delivered over the next few years. As construction activity continues around the Humber, we look forward to finding out what other projects we will be able to support.
